Dreams - Home Dreams Home History Modern Culture Theories Lucid Dreaming About Contact Sources What happens during sleep? Sleep is the backbone of human energy during the day. As you sleep, your brain’s electrical activity occurs in recurring cycles. First, you move through three stages of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. These stages range from drifting in and out of sleep (stage N1), through light sleep (stage N2), and through deeper sleep (stage N3). People waken up during stage N1 don’t even realize they were asleep. The N2 stage in sleep makes up 40 to 50 percent of sleep time. Stage N3 is the most physically restorative as brain waves slow considerably. Stage N3 is when it is most difficult to be awaked. However, the other sleep stage is called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, because the eyes move quickly back and forth under the eyelids. Dreams occur during this stage. We all experience dreams. Some may be good dreams, while others may haunt us. Yet none of us really know why we dream or what dreams actually are. Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during a certain stage of sleep. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology. Through this study scientists have determined that the length of a dream can vary from a few seconds to 20 or 30 minutes and the average person has 3-5 dreams per night in the typical two hours of REM sleep.
